Mould needs moisture, warmth and something organic to feed on. A Darwin bedroom in the wet season can supply all three: humidity that stays high day and night, heat, and the skin, sweat and dust that build up in every mattress. The risk is highest when the air-con is switched off for weeks while the house is empty, when a mattress sits on a solid base with no airflow underneath, or when a spill or accident never dried properly.
Surface mildew — spots on the cover and a musty smell — usually responds well to treatment. We vacuum with a HEPA filter so spores are captured rather than spread, treat the affected area, clean with low-moisture extraction, and sanitise. Mould that has grown deep into the foam or padding, or covers a large part of the mattress, is a different matter: cleaning cannot reach it reliably, and for health reasons we will tell you honestly that replacement is the right call rather than take your money.
The mould and mildew treatment is +$45 per mattress on top of the size price, so a queen is $180.
If anyone in the house has asthma, a mould allergy or a weakened immune system, do not sleep on a visibly mouldy mattress while you wait for a clean, and talk to your GP if symptoms appear. Leave some air-con or a dehumidifier running, keep air moving under the bed, and put a breathable protector on. A clean before you leave removes the sweat and skin that mould feeds on.
It can trigger allergies and asthma, especially for sensitive people. Don’t sleep on a visibly mouldy mattress, and speak to your GP if you have symptoms.
