In the Top End you sweat through the night for much of the year, and sweat carries salt, oils and moisture into the top layers of a mattress. Add humidity that sits high through the build-up and the wet, and a mattress rarely gets a chance to dry out fully. That is how yellowing, sour smells and mildew spots start. It also means the usual advice about steam cleaning — lots of water, leave it to air-dry — is exactly wrong here.
We use as little moisture as the job allows and extract hard, so the mattress is left barely damp rather than wet. Then we get the room working for us: air-con on, door closed, or a dehumidifier if you have one.

Any time, with the right method — but the dry season, roughly May to October, is the easiest time to clean and dry a mattress. Many households book a clean before the build-up so the mattress starts the humid months fresh, and again after the wet to deal with anything the humidity has left behind.

Common questions
Yes, if the room works with us. We use low moisture and strong extraction; you keep the room closed with the air-con or a dehumidifier running. That usually means 4–6 hours. With windows open in the wet season, it can take far longer — so please keep them shut until it is dry.
Every 6 months is sensible for most Darwin households because of the sweat and humidity load — every 3–4 months if someone has allergies, a pet sleeps on the bed, or a child is still wetting at night.
