Yellow Stains on a Mattress: Causes and Removal

Almost every mattress eventually goes yellow in the middle and at the pillow end. It is usually sweat and body oils, sometimes urine, occasionally just age. Here is how to tell and what to do.

The short answer

Most yellow mattress stains come from sweat and body oils soaking into the cover over time. Light yellowing can be improved at home with a mild detergent solution, blotting and thorough drying; deeper, even yellowing needs professional hot water extraction. A yellow patch with a defined ring and an odour is more likely urine and needs an enzyme treatment.

Why it happens

The average sleeper sweats every night, more in summer and more for people who run hot. Sweat carries salts and oils, and your skin sheds constantly. Over months and years those soak through sheets and protectors into the top of the mattress, where they oxidise and turn yellow. Hot nights speed it up, which is why mattresses in warmer parts of Australia often yellow faster.

What you can try at home

For light yellowing: mix a small amount of mild laundry detergent in cool water, dab it on with a cloth (do not soak), blot with a dry towel, and repeat. A little hydrogen peroxide mixed with detergent can lift sweat stains on white covers — spot-test first on an edge, as it can bleach coloured fabric. Dry the area thoroughly with a fan. Avoid saturating the mattress: a small damp patch dries, a soaked one does not.

When to call a professional

If the yellowing is widespread, has a smell, or has not shifted after a careful home attempt, a professional clean removes the oils and residue from deeper in the top layers, and extraction means it is not left damp. Old yellowing usually lightens noticeably but may not return to brand-new white — a good cleaner will tell you that before starting.

Keeping it from coming back

A washable protector, changed weekly with your sheets, catches most sweat before it reaches the mattress. Breathable, moisture-wicking bedding helps people who run hot. And an annual clean stops the build-up before it becomes a permanent stain.

Common questions

People also ask

Are yellow stains on a mattress unhygienic?

They are mostly sweat and body oils, which also feed bacteria and dust mites. They are not dangerous, but a clean makes the bed fresher and slows further staining.

Can yellow sweat stains be removed completely?

Fresh or light yellowing often lifts completely. Years-old yellowing usually improves a lot but may leave a faint tint.

Does a yellow mattress void the warranty?

Many manufacturers exclude stained mattresses from warranty claims, which is one reason to use a protector from day one. Check your warranty terms.
