Every mattress that has been slept on has dust mites. For most people that is harmless; for people with a dust allergy, asthma or eczema, it can mean a blocked nose every morning. Here is what actually helps.

The short answer
You cannot make a mattress permanently free of dust mites, but you can cut the allergen load substantially: use an allergen-barrier mattress protector, wash bedding weekly as hot as the fabric allows, keep the bedroom well ventilated, vacuum with a HEPA-filter vacuum, and have the mattress professionally cleaned every 3–6 months if someone in the bed has allergies or asthma.
Dust mites are microscopic arachnids that live wherever people shed skin — bedding, pillows, carpets, upholstered furniture. They do not bite and they do not carry disease. The problem for allergic people is the allergen in their droppings and body fragments, which accumulates in the top layers of a mattress and becomes airborne when you move around in bed.
These signs are common to other allergies too. If symptoms are persistent or severe, see your GP — allergy testing can confirm whether dust mites are the trigger.
Sprays that promise to "eliminate 100% of mites" cannot reach the whole mattress and do nothing about the allergen already there. Sunshine helps dry a mattress and makes it less hospitable, but it will not remove allergen from inside it. And no professional clean makes a mattress mite-free for good — anyone who promises that is overselling.
