Then check the rest

• Smell it — urine, smoke and mould odours are the hardest to remove completely
• Look at both sides and the edges for stains; ask what caused them
• Lie on it — any dip in the middle means worn-out support that cleaning cannot fix
• Ask its age and whether it had a protector on it
• Check the law label if it has one, for the brand and manufacture date
