Whether it is a toddler, an older child, a pet or an adult who was unwell, the steps are the same — act fast, blot, use an enzyme cleaner, and dry it properly. Here is how, and where DIY runs out.

The short answer
Blot up as much as you can immediately, apply an enzyme cleaner (not bleach, ammonia or hot water), let it dwell for the time on the label, blot again, then dry the mattress completely with airflow. Old or repeated accidents usually need professional enzyme treatment plus hot water extraction to stop the smell coming back.
Hot water and steam from a household iron or steamer can set the proteins in urine. Ammonia-based cleaners smell like urine to pets and can encourage them to go back to the same spot. Bleach can discolour the cover and does not break down uric acid. Heavy fragrance sprays only cover the smell for a few days. A light vinegar-and-water mix plus a sprinkle of bicarbonate of soda, vacuumed up once dry, can help with a small fresh accident — but it is a stopgap, not a cure for a soaked mattress.
Urine contains uric acid, which dries into crystals that plain water does not dissolve. On a warm or humid night those crystals pick up moisture from the air and from your body, and the smell returns. Enzyme cleaners work because they break those compounds down into something that can be rinsed away. The catch with DIY is getting the enzyme as deep as the urine went, and then getting the residue back out — household products can only be blotted, not extracted.
A yellow ring with a darker edge means the urine dried and wicked outward, and there is more of it in the foam than on the surface. Children who wet the bed several nights a week, or a pet that has claimed a spot, create layered deposits that a spray bottle will not reach. That is where a professional clean earns its money: enzyme treatment with proper dwell time, then hot water extraction to flush the broken-down residue out of the top layers. Most mattresses come back smelling clean; very old stains may leave a faint shadow.
A fitted waterproof protector that still breathes is the single best investment for a child’s bed or a pet household. Keep two, so one is always clean. For bed-wetting, absorbent bed pads on top of the protector make night-time changes quicker. And if a child is still wetting regularly past the age you would expect, a chat with your GP is worthwhile — it is common and there are good options.

Common questions
It absorbs some moisture and odour from a fresh accident, but it does not break down uric acid. Use it after an enzyme cleaner, not instead of one.
After a home treatment, anywhere from several hours to a full day depending on how wet it got. After a professional extraction clean, usually 4–6 hours.
Rarely. A single accident, or even regular bed-wetting, can almost always be treated. Replacement makes sense when the mattress is also sagging or worn out, or has been soaked deep into the core many times.
